The Bronx, New York Simon and Garfunkel had it right. Recently we spent a perfect-weather day at our amazing local zoo, considered one of the best in the world.
Even though it has rightly earned that title, due to its careful conservation and stewardship of the animals under its care, it’s getting a bit harder to see zoos as necessary and appropriate.
However, habitats for the animals have improved greatly over the years, making good zoos worthy of respect. Ours is in a beautiful setting, next to the Bronx River, with wonderful landscaping and mature plantings making it seem just a little bit wild at at times.
Lots of children, lots of animals, lots of ice cream. Who could ask for anything more?

Zoos often make me sad and I rejoiced when Flaco escaped even although he only lived for a few years. However, seeing your visit to the Bronx Zoo and so many others that created humane habitats makes me now think that giving the public access to seeing their animals up close will hopefully make them more supportive of saving them in the wild.
If you liked that, come visit us and we will take you to Lion Country Safari, 300+ acres and a 4-mile drive through with wild animals everywhere, including dozens of inquisitive (or stupid) ostriches that peck at cars if allowed too close.
The first time I saw a platypus was at the Bronx Zoo in the 40’s when I was a very young child.. I can still recall my excitement at seeing such an exotic creature. The place was great then and I can see even better now.
What a lovely, summery thing to do and great to be tourists in your own town.
