Best of Britain

London, England And where would you find that? If your search involved art, then you would head to Tate Britain, the home of British art from 1500 to today, which is housed in a traditional building with classics like Turner and Millais.

You can start at 1545 and end up in this decade, admiring paintings, sculptures and various artistic expressions by British artists. The building is large and spacious, so no need to crowd to see some of the lovely works.

Here’s a sampling of the things that caught my eye, in no particular order:

My real favorites – the ones I would take home – are those of the Charleston group (Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant…) and the Pre-Raphaelites (John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, etc.). But they were all secured too tightly to the walls.

The faithful Alan and June, along with me, partook of the cafe offerings at the museum, bookending our visit with lunch and tea. (Ending with carrot cake and banana chocolate bread.)

Art can be exhausting to appreciate.

  1. I like the museum restaurant. I never used to enjoy Turner until I saw his works there.
