A change of pace

Linz, Austria Much as we love Vienna, we thought we’d poke around a few other cities we haven’t seen yet.

We took a train here to Linz this afternoon, and are getting settled in a 500-year-old hotel de charme, a radical departure from our suite in Vienna.

We took a brief stroll to see the town square, and then headed to dinner. This looks like a very promising little city.

Don’s Food Corner

Our guide book claimed that an Indian restaurant around the corner from the hotel where we’re staying is the best in Austria. We haven’t sampled many competitors, but it turned out to be very fine.

I ordered a full course of a variety of dishes: rogan josh (lamb stew), saffron chicken korma (chunks of chicken in a creamy sauce), chickpea masala, basmati rice, naan, riata, and a little salad.

It all had a good amount of heat, which was balanced by the Kingfisher beer. It was a lot of food and I felt as stuffed as a samosa.

Jo stayed with a single order of chicken korma. It came with yellow basmati rice and some naan.

The place was packed. We snuck in at 6pm and were told that we could only stay until 8 because everything was reserved.

A departure from wiener schnitzel. Do the people in Linz have a different view of things? We’ll find out when we hit a traditional restaurant of the area. But this is “Upper Austria” and there seems to be some type of competitive spirit with Vienna. We’ll see how deep that runs.
