Monday with the Mughals

London, England Our brief London visit is coming to a close, but we’ll make sure to return for a longer stay soon. This was just a touching-base trip, but we leave with heavy hearts, and every cold-and-flu medication that Boots offers.

As is our tradition when traveling, we took time for laundry. Don has expertly conquered laundromats around the world, and today he headed off with our big black bag. He reports that London should buy a franchise from the Japanese, who know a thing or two about fast, efficient laundromats. Our local place got low marks, but it finally got done.

I spent my time at my favorite museum, the Victoria and Albert. There is so much to see here, and some real favorites like the Great Bed of Ware, but there is only so much time. I decided to concentrate on a special exhibit.

The riches and artistry of the Mughal Empire in the late 17th and early 18th century are glorious. this exhibit followed three Mughal emperors, ending with Shah Jahan, of Taj Mahal fame. It’s hard to do either the empire or the exhibit justice, but here are some samples of this tiny representation…

There is a special focus on the treasures of Gujarat. That’s meaningful for us, as we have been to this beautiful part of India, and we have good New York friends who come from that area. Feast your eyes.

After Emperor Akbar came Jahangir, who loved to travel.

And then we arrive at Shah Jahan, who left us one of the wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal, along with many other beautiful things.

Even the gift shop was delightful.

Will close now, as I’m having wonky internet connections, but let’s hope our Paris connection is better. We had a lovely farewell dinner with June and Alan, with hopes for many more.

Fare thee well, London!!
