Maybe you didn’t grow up reading Misty of Chincoteague, but you might have heard of the wild ponies that have been on the island for centuries, perhaps stranded from a long-ago shipwreck. Getting to see them is a real thrill, which is why you are being treated to the sight of one band we were lucky enough to find. This is a wonderful wildlife preserve – a national park, in fact. There is also a gorgeous beach and a lighthouse which has illuminated the Atlantic since the mid-1800’s.
While the ponies were the definite highlight of the day, we also toured lovely Easton, Maryland, and hurricane-ravished Crisfield, original home of that Catholic-home staple, Mrs. Paul’s’ and her famous fish sticks. Despite that dubious heritage, we did have some great crab cakes and hush puppies near the beach. However, I am hopeful that now that we are leaving this area and heading to North Carolina, Don has had his fill of crab. There are limits.
