The world came to run

It’s not a very sunny day in New York, but that is probably just fine for the 50,000 runners who have come here from all points of the globe to take part in the New York City Marathon.

This event is one of those things that really brings out the best in New Yorkers, thousands of whom crowded every borough to cheer on their friends, family and complete strangers across the finish line in Central Park.

I stood at mile 24, and saw the early contenders in the wheelchair, women’s and men’s division come through. The amazing Kenyans excelled again this year, winning in both the men’s and women’s race. What fun to watch them start to come though the final stretch, one at a time at first.

And then the field began to build, with exhausted runners from so many countries giving it their last bit of energy. And the crowds went wild!

It is a gorgeous day, and how wonderful that the weather cooperated for all these athletes, who came from around the corner and across oceans to give it their all. Makes you proud to be a New Yorker!
