When it rains, it pours

When last heard from, we were in Saint-Malo, looking out the window at a very rainy day.

Just five minutes after my last post was up, our computer totally crashed. My new, state-of-the-art, Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro suddenly was “no go.” What to do?

Fortunately, there was a computer repair shop around the corner from our hotel. Unfortunately, the technician suspected a dreaded motherboard issue, which he would need until Thursday to properly diagnose. Uh oh.

Needing to leave Saint-Malo the next day, we were advised to try the large town of Saint Lo, closer to our next gîte in Granville, home town of Christian Dior, and the ferry terminus for the Channel Islands.

Okay, got to the big computer repair shop at exactly noon, and blessedly it did not close for lunch. The techie there told us that there are a lot of problems with this model – now they tell me – and that Lenovo doesn’t replace parts. Is it under warranty? Hmmm. Could be – but the warranty papers are in New York.

So we left the dead computer in the shop, with the intention of going back on Thursday, on our way to the Bayeaux tapestries. Talk about combining the old and the new.

And then we gambled. Not liking the sound of things with our Yoga, we headed to the big hypermarket of E. Leclerc to see what we might do in anticipation of a death notice. The result is that we now own a French computer and are trying to recreate our electronic lives. I say it is a French computer because, well, it has a French keyboard and all the instructions are in French. You can convert the keyboard electronically to the English standard, but who knew how often I tend to look at the keyboard? Guess this will help improve my touch-typing skills. And we are trying to change the language thingie but must have missed a step so far.

Next challenge – downloading pictures and a few other necessary things.

Sigh. Cross your fingers for Thursday.
