New stars arrive in Cannes

That’s right – we have made it to the epicenter of film frenzy, which swings into full force next month. This not being the key season, we were able to secure a lovely room in the Intercontinental Carlton, the iconic and charming hotel where Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier, while filming “To Catch a Thief” with Cary Grant. Ah, the romance!

And then there is the wonder of Intercontinental points, which secured us this lovely upgrade to a view of the Mediterranean. The whole place just makes you feel star-like.

After a truly wonderful night’s sleep, we strolled around town. Last evening we walked along the promenade and today we saw the Festival Palace, where the beautiful people ascend the red carpet. Just us tourists now, and what looks to be a industry conference for syndicated TV shows. Can’t read the little badges everyone is wearing.

The shops are amazing. Bentley seems to be selling a matching cell phone line, for those with 11,000 or 6,500 euros to spend. Bet you still have to pay for minutes separately. And we see leather sneakers everywhere, which makes Don very chic. The shops are all amazing, as was the antiques market and the usual amazing food market. Sigh.

We had another lovely lunch – where did that bottle of wine go?? – and walked among the luxury brands roundaboutly back to our hotel. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday on the Riviera, even though our hotel is celebrating killing Jesus. Oh well, show-biz.
