I don’t think you got a sufficiently full understanding of how beautiful the Ragged Point Inn was, so here are some more pictures from this morning. When we saw we are traveling on the Pacific Coast Highway, understand that the Highway term is used loosely. Observe how the road cuts into the mountain here. We are so glad that Don planned this so we are going north!
We headed north today on Route 1, with some spectacular views along the way. You can even see the fog coming in at one point.
First urban stop – Carmel-by-the-Sea, home to every luxury brand you can think of, as well as yet another mission on the Camino Real founded by Fr. Junipero Serro, who is buried here. There are recreations of some of the original mission rooms, along with the cell in which he died.
And then there are the Carmel stores, which sometimes take on the looks of Tudor cottages. They have everything here that the designer shopping-bag crowd could want – makes Santa Barbara look positively homey.
Next, we drove the Pebble Beach 17-mile highway to Monterey. We are staying on Cannery Row, but John Steinbeck would not understand what they have done to his place. Imagine this hotel as a fish cannery – with its own Zen garden on the desk….
We walked to Fisherman’s Wharf for an early dinner. Along the way, we saw pelicans, seals and sea otters dining, which got our appetites up. A lovely evening in old Monterrey…

You have an eye for these things. And the salmon season opened that day, so it was reeeaaalllly fresh-caught salmon!
